"We worked so hard at that conference!!! Each had a mystery book sketched out by the time we left, and I can remember some of the stories quite vividly. I wonder if any of them have been written. I know mine hasn't. It was great fun! MK worked as hard or harder than any of us, and I learned so much!!!!" Merla Dean
M. K. Wren and her late pal, Salsa |
M.K. Wren has lived on the Oregon Coast for more than twenty years. She's set two stunning mystery series in that rugged, rain-drenched locale. She's also one of the founding members of Oregon Writers Colony.
Though she began her career as a painter and sculptor, Wren started writing her first mystery series when she took a job in a book store. That series, featuring Conan Flagg, book store owner, launched her into the first rank of Pacific Northwest mystery writers. She also published science fiction and one mainstream novel, Gift Upon the Shore. In The Medusa Pool (1999), Wren introduced a new mystery series around the character of Neeley Jones, a beautifully drawn figure who is sheriff of an Oregon coastal town.
Wren is an inspired teacher of writing, and she’s led numerous workshops at Oregon Writers Colony on the art of mystery writing. She pays meticulous attention to craft, sharing the nuts and bolts of her own writing process as well as offering helpful critiques. She also brings depth of vision to workshops. For example, she helps students see that series characters must have inner passions, and a moral or ethical philosophy, all part of "the spirit behind the character" that writers must get in touch with in order to make their creations unique.
M.K. Wren has mentored scores of Oregon Writers Colony members. We’re deeply grateful to her for sharing so generously of her time and talent.
