Independent bookstores are a writer's best friend.  They support local writers with book signings and speaking opportunities that the large national chains might not provide.  Oregon Writers Colony wants to take this opportunity to salute and support our local independent booksellers.  This page is devoted to them.  They not only support local writers, but they support local writing organizations.  Thanks to all of you.

BROADWAY BOOKS

Broadway Books is a great neighborhood bookstore located in Northeast Portland.  Founded in 1992 by Gloria Borg Olds and Roberta Dyer the store is still owned by these two friends, who work at the store almost every day.

The store carries a good selection of books in all the regular subjects at its 2,000 square foot location, with strong sections of contemporary literary fiction, biography and Judaica.  They happily special order books at no extra charge, gift wrap for free, and ship books anywhere.  Their staff if friendly and knowledgeable, and good at suggesting books to customers.

The store is most proud of its continued connection to the community it serves.  They host readings by local authors, writing groups and schools, and consistently support local literacy programs.  In addition to supporting local writers and students, the store is involved in fundraising activities with several organizations throughout the year, and they regularly feature readings by national touring authors.

Shortly before their tenth anniversary, the two owners were thrilled to see the national chain store move from its location three blocks down the street and into the shopping center.  They like to tell everyone that they drove the big national chain store off the street and into the mall where it belongs.

Looking Glass Bookstore

An independent, family-owned bookstore that sells a broad range of new books, with specialties in international literature, politics, children's books, environmental issues, and poetry.  Our small attentive staff, eclectic inventory, and author events have been bringing  customers back for 30 years

Oregon Writers Colony is pleased to call Looking Glass Bookstore home of OWC Presents! our free monthly mini-workshop.  Owner, Karin Anna, welcomes the group with refreshments, a good stack of the author's books and a comfortable setup. She opens the store—normally closed on Mondays—the 4th Monday evening of each month, to welcome OWC members and the general public to this continuing series of writers reading and talking about different aspects of the writing craft. Organizers of OWC Presents! are excited about the move to Looking Glass Bookstore.  The reading space is bright and ample, complete with a glass wall that faces onto a garden.  (The little red caboose entry to the store belies the spacious rooms beyond.)  And, Karin Anna and her staff are warm and eager to welcome one and all.  Handicapped access is behind the store.

A big hearty thank you to Karin Anna and her staff.  We appreciate all you do for us.

Jill Hinckley started Murder by the Book in 1983, and together with her partner, Carolyn Lane and their able staff, has been happily serving the mystery reading public ever since.  The store hosts frequent readings by mystery writers and has a great emailed newsletter about new books.  The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. They will mail your book order to you if you want them to, but going to the store is such a joy, I can't imagine having them mail my orders.  Jill retired in April, 2007, but the bookstore and staff remain to serve up the world of mysteries as always.

POWELL'S CITY OF BOOKS

Powell's is said to be the largest new and used book store in the world. The original downtown store on SW 10th & W. Burnside fills an entire city block and boasts more than one million new and used books.  When asked what they'd like to see, visitors to Portland often say Powell's.  My parents loved the place, and often spent several hours there each time they came to Portland.

Powell's came to suburbia in 1984, opening their  Cascade Plaza store in Beaverton. In 2007 Powell's moved to Cedar Hills Crossing in Beaverton.

Powell's Technical Books once was simply a corner of the flagship store downtown.  Now it has its own location with 10,000 feet of space and 82,000 volumes watched over by Fup, the store cat, practically a Phd. in her own "write".  You'll also find a museum display of old collectible computers.

There are three locations for Powell's Books at the Portland Airport.  These are full-service, new and used bookstores, staffed by knowledgeable men and women

For other Powell's locations, including Books for Cooks and Gardners and Powell's Travel Store, see the list on the right, and be sure to visit their incredible website.

THURSTON BOOK EXCHANGE

Thurston Book Exchange is located on the east end of Springfield, in the growing Thurston neighborhood. The store was established in 1984 and boasts over 80,000 used titles.  New bestsellers are 25% off, and the store has a great selection of  greeting cards and gift items. Owner Peggy West, an avid reader herself, enjoys matching the perfect book with each customer who asks for her help.  The store also special orders new books on request at a %25 discount.

Booksignings are featured several times a year. In the past the store has hosted Oregon authors Lisa Jackson, Samantha James, Carola Dunn, and Elaine Knighton, Texan author Jodi Thomas and Rosemary Laurey all the way from Ohio.
Once a reader finds the store it becomes one of their favorites to visit!
