Samantha Ducloux Waltz was recently interviewed by Amy Hunold-VanGundy, co-editor of The Ultmate Runner.  Samantha's story, "My Running Partners," appears in the anthology, which will be available in bookstores in May. Waltz's interview, which also features other running stories and advice for writers, is available here

Two of Samantha's stories, "The Granddaddy" and "T-Shirt Tales," will appear in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Runners to be released July 13, 2010. In "The Granddaddy" she encounters the granddaddy of all bull moose on a running trail in Anchorage. In "T-Shirt Tales" she faces "The Wall" during the Cascade Runoff. Her book will be a fun gift for anyone who runs, hopes to run, or once upon a time tied on their running shoes and headed out the door.

She'll also be reading about her beloved horse, Vida, from the book Why We Ride: Women Writers on the Horses in Their Lives at the downtown Powell's Bookstore (NW 10th and Burnside), June 6 at 7:30 p.m.

Robyn Parnell's short story, "Maggie’s Rain”, appears in the current edition of the literary journal Talking River Review, #27-28, Spring 2010.

F.I. Goldhaber’s poem, "Separation of Church and State" appeared in the March 27, 2010 issue of protestpoems.org, a poetry journal devoted to work that tackles human rights issues.

Don Colburn, health reporter at The Oregonian, accepted a buyout in December and retired early. His poem, "Coach," won the Duckabush Poetry Prize given by A River & Sound Review. His new chapbook, Because You Might Not Remember, was a finalist for the Finishing Line Press Poetry Prize and will be published in 2010.
 
Author Christina Katz was a participant in a panel at Digital Book World held in New York City January 26-27, 2010. The panel was called "Teaching Authors to Fish: Empowering Authors To Market Themselves" with Katz, Peter Clifton, President & CEO of FiledBy, Matt Schwartz, Director of Digital Strategy & Business Development, Random House, and Cecelia Tan, Founder of Circlet Press. Hundreds of publishing executives, agents, editors and publishing vendors attendeed the conference. Katz is the author of Get Known Before the Book Deal and Writer Mama, both from Writer's Digest Books.

 

Janice Hussein has a recent article published in The 2010 Novel & Short Story Writer's Market, entitled "The Unsympathetic Protagonist". 

 

OWC Mentor Larry Brooks writes, "I’ve reached an agreement to publish The Six Core Competencies of Successful Storytelling with Writers Digest Books.  Release is scheduled for February 2011, which gives you an idea of how quickly the publishing machine worksThis is huge for me, and for Storyfix.  This developmental model is sorely needed out there, and I’m hoping it goes viral and becomes the next big thing in the oeuvre of writing instruction.  I will keep you posted on this as the process unfolds.

In the meantime, a reminder that my new novel, Whisper of the Seventh Thunder, is coming out from Sons of Liberty Publishing in late February of 2010."

 

David Levine's short story collection, Space Magic from Wheatland Press, recently won the Oregon Science Fiction Conventions, Inc. Endeavour Award. This award is for a distinguished science fiction or fantasy book from a Pacific Northwest author and includes a $1000 check and an etched glass plaque.

Art Johnson earned second place in the recent short story fiction contest at the Jack London Writers Conference in Foster City, California. Art loves writing in the horror genre and says the idea for his story, The Violin Maker, came from a visit to a small music shop in Anchorage, Alaska, where he saw an older man repairing a violin on the workbench in his shop. Art has written four novels and is working on his fifth, Homeless, Inc.

Katherine Bolger Hyde's children's picture book, Lucia, Saint of Light, was published by Conciliar Press in October. The book relates the story of St. Lucia and the celebration held in her honor in Sweden and around the world on December 13.

An article by Janice Hussein appears in The 2010 Novel & Short Story Writer's Market, called "The Unsympathetic Protagonist." Janice is a freelance editor and writer, with six  years of editing experience and a master's degree in writing.  She teaches classes in the Portland area.
