Twenty-three poems were entered in the second annual Elizabeth Bolton Poetry Contest, which was coordinated by Judith Massee. Oregon State Poetry Association president, Marie Buckley, acted as final judge. Her comments about each winner are included here. The winners poems will be featured in upcoming Colonygrams, and they will read their winning poems at the November 23rd OWC Presents! First Place: “Awakening” by Marian Shapiro, Lexington, MA The writer enfolded classical mythology seamlessly into the poem, which made what could have been expressed as common experience stand out. The poem’s language lured me into it with the same lyrical beauty one imagines the Sirens used in their attempt to capture Odysseus and his men. Second Place: “Villanelle for Selo” by Dorothy Mack, Depoe Bay, OR I was struck with the haunting refrains in this poem and impressed with the writer’s variations on the recurring lines. I think a villanelle should offer an experience so memorable that it lingers on repeating itself in a reader’s mind. This villanelle did that for me. Third Place: “In Bed with Edgar Allan at the Sylvia Beach Hotel” by Ellaraine Lockie, Sunnyvale, CA The first stanza pulled me into this poem with delight and anticipation of what was to come. The writer offers an innovative view of what gothic writing might do for us, and the description put me right into the room with her. I admit to being an Edgar Allan fan myself. Honorable Mentions: First Honorable Mention: "Rebellion” by Ellaraine Lockie Second Honorable Mention: “Lullaby for Marguerite” by Martha Ragland Third Honorable Mention: “The Daily Presentation of Things” by Mike Aspros |
